Colliery Question

Started by: mrs m (289)

Grandfather was a pitman. If he lived in Scholes in 1926 onwards, which pit would he have worked at? Are there existing records from that era?

A lot of men from Scholes worked at Maypole Colliery in Abram, but as H. M. said, could have been one of many. Rose Bridge, Alexandra, and Ince Moss were all walking distance from Scholes.

I was a miner and lived at Downall Green but started of at Parkside until I found out there was no coaches going to the pit .Bus to Ashton then another to Newton then a long walk to the pit .Soon transfered to Golborne. Mrs M and Linma I should imagine both Grand parents worked within about 5 miles of were they lived (Normal walking distance then) but over the years there where between 2000 and 4000 mines around the area .

The road where I lived in Platt Bridge was cobble stones and what a noise when the miners were walking along.

My grandfather lived by the canal in Lower Ince and worked as a timber man at Ince Moss until his death in an accident there in 1922. He was a memeber of the mines rescue team a picture of which is on the mines section.

Neither of my grandfathers ever worked as a policeman. Or a postman for that matter!
